CERRITOS, CA – Moira Smiley & VOCO is a fiery Folk Roots band with exquisite vocals that create a joyous and energetic sound. Its music is defined as a combination of the wild precision of an Eastern European dance song, the rich rhythm of a South African mbira tune, and the plaintive improvisation of an Appalachian or African-American spiritual. Moira Smiley & VOCO performs in a Sierra Nights concert at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) on Thursday, March 6, 7:30 PM. Tickets are now on sale at the CCPA Ticket Office, by calling (562) 467-8818, or at

Born in Vermont, singer and composer MOIRA SMILEY moved to Indiana and graduated from Indiana University (IU) with a degree in Early Music Vocal Performance. While at IU, Smiley toured with her vocal quartet, VIDA, singing a cappella Folk songs. VIDA went on to record three CDs of traditional and original songs and performed at prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center.
After relocating to California, Smiley began to sing with KITKA Eastern European Vocal Ensemble, and continues to perform with the group today. As a soloist, Smiley released Rua, a CD of Irish songs, Appalachian ballads, and original music.
In the Early Music world, Smiley taught at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. She toured and recorded with the acclaimed Theatre of Voices, Fretwork Cosort of Viols, The Dufay Collective, Sinfonye, and The Concord Ensemble. In 2001 and 2002, she won the Barbara Thornton Memorial Scholarship for Medieval Music, and recorded material on one of the discs for the Complete Hildegard Works With Sinfonye. She was also featured on the soundtrack for the film The Affair of the Necklace.
MOIRA SMILEY & VOCO fuses a new sound with voices, banjo, cello, and percussion that is rooted in traditional song. First founded in 2006, the group was chosen to represent FAR-West at Folk Alliance ’07, and has performed at the Kate Wolf Festival, California WorldFest, WorldOne Festival, Lotus Festival, The Getty Center, and the San Luis Mozart Festival. The ensemble performs an amazing spectrum of music that it describes as “post-Folk, improvisation-built songs, ballads, vocal symphonies, and dance songs.”
